Think and Grow Rich Summary

Your thoughts become who you are. This is the premise in Napoleon Hill’s bestseller Think and Grow Rich. He took time to study over 40 millionaires to understand what made them attain success and he passes on that knowledge to you in this book.

This Think and Grow Rich summary by Napoleon Hill highlights the 13 principles that he discusses at length in his book and how you can use them to attain wealth.

Here are the principles that Napoleon Hill discusses in his book.

Desire – for you to get what you want in life, then you must have the deep burning desire for it. You must be ready to spend the rest of your life pushing for your desire. Napoleon Hill gives the story of Barnes who always wanted to partner with Edison.

The opportunity presented itself in a way that Barnes had not anticipated, but because he had his burning desire still in him, he took the chance and got what he wanted all along. From their great partnership was born the slogan “Made by Edison Installed by Barnes.”

Opportunity will not always come as you would expect. “That is one of the tricks of opportunity. It has a sly habit of slipping in by the back door, and often it comes disguised in the form of misfortune, or temporary defeat. Perhaps this is why so many fail to recognize opportunity.”

“What a different story people would have to tell if only they would adopt a definite purpose and stand by that purpose until it had time to become an all-consuming obsession.” With this kind of obsession and desire, you would never quit.

Faith – when you have faith, you can be able to visualize and have the belief in the attainment of the desire that you have. Faith, Napoleon Hill says, is the second step towards riches. Here is what he says about faith:

FAITH is the starting point of all accumulation of riches!

FAITH is the basis of all “miracles,” and all mysteries which cannot be analyzed by the rules of science!

FAITH is the only known antidote for FAILURE!

FAITH is the element, the “chemical” which, when mixed with prayer, gives one direct communication with Infinite Intelligence.

FAITH is the element which transforms the ordinary vibration of thought, created by the finite mind of man, into the spiritual equivalent.

FAITH is the only agency through which the cosmic force of Infinite Intelligence can be harnessed and used by man.

Auto Suggestion – auto-suggestion is the only way to get your thoughts to the subconscious mind. Your thoughts need to get to the subconscious mind so they can impact change in your life. You, therefore, need to learn how to control your subconscious mind through meditation and other practices.

When you implant your thoughts in your mind, then you are able to remove those thoughts of yourself that the society has implanted in your subconscious mind which make you live a mediocre life. The society has brainwashed you into thinking that you are not worthy and that having specific desires about your life is sinful.

Specialized Knowledge – “KNOWLEDGE will not attract money unless it is organized and intelligently directed, through practical PLANS OF ACTION, to the DEFINITE END of accumulation of money. Lack of understanding of this fact has been the source of confusion to millions of people who falsely believe that “knowledge is power.”

It is nothing of the sort! Knowledge is only potential power. It becomes power only when, and if, it is organized into definite plans of action, and directed to a definite end.”

It, therefore, means that you must have a plan of action on how to attain what you desire. You use specialized knowledge not general knowledge to make that plan.

Imagination – in this chapter Napoleon discusses how you can use creative imagination to attain success. What the mind can imagine the mind can be able to achieve. When you are able to use your creative imagination, it sends triggers to the subconscious mind about your desires, and therefore you are pushed to take action. To take action then you need an organized plan.

Organized Planning – in this step to success you will learn how to use the “mastermind” to create a plan. Napoleon notes that no individual has sufficient knowledge, education, native ability, and experience to be able to accumulate wealth without the cooperation of others.

If your first plan doesn’t work well, you need to replace it with another and so on until you have achieved what you want.

Decision – most people fail in life because of the lack of decision and the enemy to decision that is affecting so many people is procrastination. You should learn to beat procrastination so that everything you are supposed to do in your master plan gets done. This is the only way you can get closer to your desires and achieve your success.

Persistence – what if you fail at the first attempt which is what happens most of the times? You must be persistent and have the power of will so you can transmute your desires into reality. “Those who have cultivated the HABIT of persistence seem to enjoy insurance against failure. No matter how many times they are defeated, they finally arrive up toward the top of the ladder.”

Power of the Master Mind – you need to surround yourself with the right kind of motivation that you need to achieve your goals. You can accomplish this only by surrounding yourself with people who you resonate with.

Transmutation  you will need to gather the energy within you that will enable you to summon your creative imagination. When you get to your creative imagination, then you can be sure you will be able to create what you see.

The Subconscious Mind – this is the connecting link between your thoughts and your reality. You need to be able to master the subconscious mind so you can put in it the thoughts that you want to see in your life.

The Brain – “When stimulated, or “stepped up” to a high rate of vibration, the mind becomes more receptive to the vibration of thought which reaches it through the ether from outside sources. This “stepping up” process takes place through positive, or negative emotions. Through the emotions, the vibrations of thought may be increased.”

The Sixth Sense – the sixth sense kicks in after you have mastered all the above principles. It is not something that can be explained to you if all the other principles have not been perfected. The sixth sense will get you through. “Through the aid of the sixth sense, you will be warned of impending dangers in time to avoid them, and notified of opportunities in time to embrace them.”

Why You Should Read the Book

Your thoughts hold you back from becoming what you could become. Your riches in money and material possessions are attainable only if you expand your thinking and adopt the principles outlined in this book.
